Corryong Day Three
Wednesday morning, the 7th April we woke to another beautiful morning. Decided that such a nice morning deserved a bacon and eggs breakfast so fired up the BBQ. The smells and the sounds of the birds, and the morning sun was pretty special.
Quentin (QT) and Louise are staying at Clancy’s Overflow Campground. So they arrived to join us on a day out. After a chat and a cuppa we took a drive to Khancoban. The Snowy Mountain Hydro Sceme operates nearby at Murray 1 and Murray 2 plants. Unfortunately they were closed to the public so we did not get to see the spectacular views of the plunging pipes into the valley. I had always wanted to see Khancoban anyway, mainly because it features in a Slim Dusty song. There was no indication and signage of that feature that I could see but it is a pretty little place with some clever tree planting. It is nestled in a beautiful valley and in spectacular country.
We then drove to a lookout on the road to Walwa which has gorgeous views of the Murray River. Again borrowing photos from two years ago to give a clearer picture due to the smoke.
Then drove on to Mount Mitta Mitta to show QT and Louise the spectacular views of the Upper Murray Valley, Corryong and views out to Mount Kosciusko. It is a great 16km drive all on gravel but good gravel. The views are certainly worth it. I will use the actual photos taken on the day this time with three at the end from a couple of years ago. Mount Kosciusko though was very hazy due to the smoke.
We then continued on to Walwa which is a pretty little town on the Victorian side of the Murray. We had lunch there. The burger and milk shake was delicious. The art deco buildings are pretty cool. Linda and the girls checked out the Op Shop.
I then drove the 500 yards from the main street to the Murray. A couple of families were swimming there and there was a swing rope set up on an obliging tree. There is also a van park right there and I saw a couple having a swim by going in at one end of the park and floating down river to where they got out.
After lunch we started the drive back. We stopped off at a couple of Murray River Reserve camp sites to check them out for future reference. If the weather holds this nice we might go there for a day when we leave Corryong.
Stopped off to look at Tinaldra. It was established in 1837. Ancient by Aussie standards.
On the way back Linda and I also stopped off at the Towong Turf Club mainly to look at the old pavilion. It was pretty cool and the Turf Club is situated in a beautiful valley.
Then after a little shopping we got back to camp. It had been a beaut day out. Time for a beer with QT and Ross. The girls went to the twilight markets in town. It wasn’t a tough choice for the guys. The market -v- a beer. Every night there is a pretty good sunset so plenty to enjoy here.
Louise was worn out from a great day so she and QT didn’t make it back to our camp when they went to grab some things. We had a fire that night and a great steak on the barbie.
