Deniliquin Via Tocumwal and Finley
Monday morning, the 19th of April another chilly morning as all of the mornings had been since the trip started almost. It was time to pack up and move on. We left Cobram and headed to Deniliquin via Tocumwal and Finley. Tocumwal was a beautiful little town on the Newell Highway. An interesting fact about Tocumwal is that during WW2 it was selected as a place to train bomber crews and establish all that was needed to mount a bomber defence of Australia. We had a walk around town and there were some great old buildings that have been preserved and some good murals on walls in the town.
Whilst Linda and I were having more of a look around we got a call from Jan & Ross that their Landcruiser would not start. They had been having battery trouble to we slipped back to where they were, jump started them and we all then headed out of town but on the way we stopped to have a look at the blowhole which is about 5km out on the way to Deniliquin. The blowhole is just a hole in some granite rock. But it is a curious thing that when the Murray River is very low the water in this hole swirls around and makes a sound. So the Murray and the water in this hole must be connected in subterraneous canal. The earth and its creation never ceases to amaze me.
We then moved on to Finley. I didn’t think there was to much to this town really. It has a bit of history with the old railway but that seems to be it. Apparently back in the day it became a thing to have part of the platform at ground level and the other part at the carriage level.
So we moved on to Deniliquin and stayed at the Pioneer Tourist Park. It was park with bush out the back of it so we went for a walk there.
We just relaxed that evening and did not bother sightseeing till the next day. Jan & Ross had arrived at Deniliquin and gone straight to an auto electrician. They wound up having to replace both batteries. They also had a vets appointment for 4pm for their little dog. Little Emily is much improved and on the mend so all good there. In the morning I checked out the small blacksmith shop display at the Pioneer Van Park.
The handyman there was a nice bloke and he gave me a bit of info about it all. This motor actually works and he started it up for me.
We checked out of the van park and parked in town where we checked out Denny.
Denny is on the Edward River which flows to the Murray.
This sculpture was cool.
There were some great old buildings and it was good to see them preserved and the history being kept and appreciated. Lots of the buildings were around the 1860s, old for Australian standards.
Then we walked up to the water tower to see the mural of the kookaburras and the campfire.
Denny is another great Aussie town.
