The Road To Hay
Tuesday the 20th April we left Deniliquin just before lunch. There was a pub called Pretty Pine which was 15km on the way to Hay and we planned to have lunch there. On arrival found that it was closed for lunch. Linda did not like the look of it anyway. So we went on the tiny town of Wanganella where there was a good spot for lunch. There were some good plaques there for us to read about the place. Wanganella was an important stop for the Cobb & Co coachline on the trip from Deniliquin to Hay.
Another interesting plaque talked about saltbush and its importance to the grazing industry and therefore the history of the area.
Then we went on to the Black Swamp where we read about the legend of the Headless Horseman. There was a butcher from Moulamein who, when he heard about a herd of cattle being driven would masquerade as a ghost and steal a few cattle. Apparently that gave rise to the legend.
We then went on to Booroorban where we stopped at the Royal Mail Hotel built in 1868, so old and original. This was another stop for the Cobb & Co coaches. We had a beer here, unfortunately no beer on tap.
The history on the plaques was interesting.
We checked out the stable out back which were the ones used for the Cobb & Co horses.
The old well was also in use still.
