Yarrawonga & Boat Races

Friday the 16th April we decided to move on to a spot on the Murray River at Yarrawonga. After having a good look at the Bible of camping, Wikicamps, we drove through the town and headed down a road for the spot we picked out. Jan & Ross went ahead and found the track in was very rough and steep. They felt my longer van would bottom out badly. Linda and I checked out another camp. What we read on Wikicamps about that spot appeared to be true, ie the place was infested with permanents, and it appeared ferals included. The other camps also had permanents. It was getting all to hard so we decided on staying in a caravan park. With that decided we went to the Yarrawonga Holiday Park which is the most central one in town. We went there as we found out when we crossed the lake that there was speed boat racing going on this weekend. We also wanted to checkout the town as well. The other attraction of this park is that it is on the Murray, although our van site did not have river views. This was our van site. I have never had such a sloping van site and so I had to set the jack on a high setting. I found it funny having the drawbar so close to the ground.
A short walk from the site gave us views of the Murray River.
After setting up and lunch we went up into the town and to the lake where we checked out the speed boat racing practice sessions. It was only Friday but already there was a festival atmosphere beginning with a big set up for races over the weekend. It was obviously a big event for those interested in that stuff. Some of these awesome boats were transported in and out of the water using a crane. Very efficient.
There was this beautiful paddle steamer moored against the wall.
But now down to the exciting stuff. These boats just roared with power and noise. These were just practice rounds. They were just trying to iron out any bugs and we could tell there were a few bugs going on in one or two boats. But even so they were impressive. Here are two videos but three more will be added when I have better internet. On Saturday morning we had a short walk along the Murray to the end of the van park.
We packed up and left the van park but then had coffee in town. Had another look at the boat races but our timing was out so we did not get to seen any actual races. However, in the park on the lake was this awesome display of vintage speed boats and old cars. They were very cool.
Then it was time to move on to Cobram.

The Man From Snowy River Bush Festival - Corryong Days Four To Seven

Thursday the 8th of April, the start day for the festival, finally arrived. For the next four days we were to enjoy a great festival with so much to see. I am writing this now, five days after the start of the festival as I did not get time to do so during it. I wasn’t about to miss the good stuff by spending time on the blog so I am doing my best now to remember everything. That Thursday morning there were a lot of juniors competing so we did not hurry over to the festival. I think I did a power walk to the town lookout and we got some shopping done and had a coffee in town. Town was just a short walk from camp. We went into the festival grounds after lunch. I firstly had a look at a demonstration of cutting, cutting horses, that is. Ooh that still doesn’t probably help you. It is about the rider and horse separating cattle, not actually cutting a poor horse. The name of the guy doing the demonstrating was Phil Webb who is a bit of a legend who has done a lot of horse work in the US....

Corryong Day Three

Wednesday morning, the 7th April we woke to another beautiful morning. Decided that such a nice morning deserved a bacon and eggs breakfast so fired up the BBQ. The smells and the sounds of the birds, and the morning sun was pretty special. Quentin (QT) and Louise are staying at Clancy’s Overflow Campground. So they arrived to join us on a day out. After a chat and a cuppa we took a drive to Khancoban. The Snowy Mountain Hydro Sceme operates nearby at Murray 1 and Murray 2 plants. Unfortunately they were closed to the public so we did not get to see the spectacular views of the plunging pipes into the valley. I had always wanted to see Khancoban anyway, mainly because it features in a Slim Dusty song. There was no indication and signage of that feature that I could see but it is a pretty little place with some clever tree planting. It is nestled in a beautiful valley and in spectacular country. The Road Home - From Hay through West Wyalong, Grenfell to Cowra and Home

Thursday morning the 22nd of April we woke to a cloudy morning which was okay for travelling. We were leaving Hay to head home with and overnight stay in Cowra. After getting packed and sorted we said our goodbyes to Jan & Ross. We had a great time with them for the last three weeks. So off we went and travelled across the Hay plains. The terrain is so flat and not many trees. In one sense it is very boring but in another sense I love it. I have done a lot of travelling around Walgett and other parts of the outback and this was similar. We were heading home via West Wyalong, Grenfell, Cowra and Bathurst as there were several sections of that trek that I had not been on before. The first town we got to was Goolgowi. It was a tiny town. A few buildings around gave evidence of better days in the past but the general store was closed and there was only a small service station open for shopping.
